Expansion of Speed Limiter Regime in Singapore: What It Means for Your Fleet?
In a decisive move to enhance road safety, the Singapore Traffic Police (TP) has announced the mandatory installation of speed limiters on lorries with a Maximum Laden Weight (MLW) of 3,501kg to 12,000kg. It is expected to impact around 32,000 vehicles across Singapore.
Why Speed Limiters?
Excessive speed has long been a leading contributor to road accidents and fatalities. Speed limiters are a proven solution that enhances road safety by capping the vehicle’s maximum speed. Beyond safety, speed limiters also offer benefits like:
- Improved fuel efficiency
- Lower vehicle maintenance costs
- Better driver behaviour
- More sustainable fleet operations
When is my lorry or fleet required to install a speed limiter?
Category | MLW (Kg) | Compliance Date |
Older lorries (Registered before 1 Jan 2018) | 5,001 – 12,000 | 1 Jan 2026 |
Older lorries (Registered before 1 Jan 2018) | 3,501 – 5,000 | 1 Jul 2026 |
Newer lorries (Registered on or after 1 Jan 2018) | 5,001 – 12,000 | 1 Jan 2027 |
Newer lorries (Registered on or after 1 Jan 2018) | 3,501 – 5,000 | 1 Jul 2027 |
From 1 January 2026, even newly imported lorries must be fitted with compliant speed limiters before registration. The speed limiter restricts the lorry’s maximum speed to 60km/h. Vehicle owners must ensure installation by the respective deadlines to avoid facing penalties.
If your fleet includes lorries above 3.5 tonnes, it’s essential to start planning now. Retrofitting can take time, especially as demand increases closer to the compliance deadlines. By acting early, you’ll avoid last-minute rush, potential penalties, and unplanned downtime. You’ll also demonstrate your business’s commitment to road safety and compliance—values that matter in today’s logistics and transport sectors.
